Potassium nitrate is a chemical compound with a sharp, salty, bitter taste and the chemical formula KNO
₃. It is an ionic salt of potassium ions K⁺ and nitrate ions NO₃⁻, and is therefore an alkali metal nitrate. It occurs in nature as a mineral, niter (or nitre outside the US). It is a source of nitrogen, and nitrogen was named after niter. Potassium nitrate is one of several nitrogen-containing compounds collectively referred to as saltpeter (or saltpetre outside the US).

₃ എന്ന രാസ സൂത്രവാക്യമുള്ള ഒരു രാസ സംയുക്തമാണ് പൊട്ടാസ്യം നൈട്രേറ്റ്. പൊട്ടാസ്യം അയോണുകളുടേയും (K⁺), നൈട്രേറ്റ് അയോണുകളുടേയും (NO₃^-) അയോണിക് ലവണമാണിത്. അതിനാൽ ഒരു ക്ഷാര ലോഹ നൈട്രേറ്റ് ആണ്. പ്രകൃതിയിൽ ഇത് നൈറ്റർ ആയി കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇത് നൈട്രജന്റെ ഉറവിടമാണ്. നൈട്രജന് നൈറ്ററിൽ നിന്നാണ് ആ പേര് ലഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. പൊട്ടാസ്യം നൈട്രേറ്റ് പൊതുവേ സാൾട്ട്പീറ്റർ (saltpeter or saltpetre) എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്.
